Acura RL 2005 - Present
The Acura RL is the flagship car for the North American luxury brand Acura which is also sold in Japan as the Honda Legend. The only difference is the trim, badging and right-hand drive alignment. The first generation of the RL appeared in 1996 taking place of the second generation Acura Legend. The current Acura RL appeared on the US market in September 2004 as a 2005 model, and received a facelift in 2009.
The first generation Acura RL used a 3.5 liter V6, which produced 225 hp. The second generation used a new and improved version of the 3.5 liter V6 tuned to produce 290 hp. Since the facelift in 2009, the RL's engine has grown in displacement to 3.7 liters and now produces 300 hp at 6,300 rpm, and 271 lb-ft at 5,000 rpm. Honda's VTEC technology (Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control) electronically adjusts the exhaust valves to improve horse power as well as increase torque figures.
The engine is mated to a 5-speed automatic gearbox with sequential sport shift that enables the car to accelerate to 60 mph in a respectable 6.5 seconds. The Acura RL still remains quite thirsty reporting 16 mpg in the city, and 22 mpg on the highway.
Beginning with the second generation, Acura offers the RL in an exclusive all-wheel drive format. The SH-AWD system distributes torque quickly and evenly to the corners for maximum traction on slippery road conditions. The one major drawback to the Acura's handling is less than stellar braking. The pedal requires more effort than it should to bring the RL to an abrupt stop.
The interior has been updated along with the exterior in 2009, sporting a more refined and well finished leather and wood trim. The driver’s seat and driving position are very comfortable and supportive in tight corners thanks to the power tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel. Due to the sculpting of the rear bench, the rear seats are very comfortable with two adults but can accommodate three with ease.
In terms of safety, the Acura RL earned five out of five stars in both frontal and side impact crash tests conducted by the government. The IIHS named the car “Top Safety Pick” in its class, after achieving the institute’s top score in both frontal and side impact tests. The safety features offered by Acura for the RL include Electronic Stability Control, front airbags, front-side airbags, and side curtain airbags.
