Acura TL is a mid-size luxury sedan built by the luxury division of Honda, Acura brand. The TL has been around in the states since 1996, when the first generation appeared, this one was also known on the Japanese market as Honda Inspire and Honda Saber. The second generation took its place after just two years of “service”. From 2004 and 2008 the Acura produced the third generation of the TL. In 2009 the fourth generation of the TL made its debut, with a fresh design, first seen on the TSX, the controversial Aura Keen Edge Dynamic design language.

The TL model is Acura’s best selling model and is the second best selling luxury sedan in the United States, being outranked by the German BMW 3 Series.

The TL is available with two engines, a standard 3.5 liter V6 with a maximum of 280 and 254 lb-ft of torque, for the front-wheel drive version and a 3.7 liter V6 that produces a top output of 305 hp and 273 lb-ft, available only for the SH-AWD (this stands for Super Handling All-Wheel Drive), this is Acura’s advanced all-wheel drive system that can put the power to the wheel with most traction in hundreds of a second on slippery road condition or can deliver more power to the exterior wheel when in a corner, to reduce any oversteer.

Acura offers the TL with two transmissions an five speed automatic and an optional six speed manual. The performances are quite good, with any of the two engines, the TL can get to 60 from standstill in about 6.5 seconds with the automatic transmission. The quarter mile is covered in only 14.5 seconds. The top speed of the Acura TL is electronically limited at 130 mph.

The fuel consumption of the TL’s 3.5 liter engine is rated at 18 miles per gallon for the city drive and 26 miles per gallon on the highway cruising, those figures are valid for either the automatic or the manual. If you consider the all wheel drive model you should know that this version will return 1 mile per gallon less than the front-wheel drive 3.5 liter.

Being marketed as a Sport Sedan, you should expect at a firm suspension, that is also supple and controlled. The car handles very well on the road, especially theH-AWD version. The bumps and the wholes are well absorbed by the suspensions. As for the braking you have to know that the TL stops in a very short distance.

The interior of the Acura TL is well assembled and finished and abounded with high quality materials. The driving position is very comfortable, thanks to the manual tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, and the well sculpted seats and very supportive also. The controls are straightforward, an exception is the audio controls which are fitted between the climate controls, and this thing is pretty confusing at the beginning, but after a short while you will get used to it. The car can seat five adults, but the rear seats are chair shaped only for two, and I must say that the leg room in the back is pretty tight.

The Acura TL is very safe car, fact proven by the five star rating in all crash tests conducted by the federal government. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) has not yet released crash test results for the 2010 TL model, the 2009 model received the “Top Safety Pick” status because it earned the highest possible score, “Good,” in each of the institute’s tests.
