Dodge Durango
The Dodge Durango was designed as a durable truck-based SUV intended to tow almost 9,000 lbs and seat up to 8 passengers comfortably. It served as Dodge’s first high volume consumer SUV replacing the moderately successful Ramcharger SUV. Despite its versatile nature, the Durango was still considerably capable as an off road vehicle.
Upon its initial release, the Dodge Durango was met with mostly positive reviews. It was praised for its versatility, size, and tasteful styling in comparison to its competition.
Engines
Initially, the car was offered with a 4.7 L PowerTech V8 which was replaced in the year 2000 for the 5.2 L Magnum V8 engine. Later that year a performance version was released with a 5.9 L Magnum V8 called the R/T. The Shelby S.P.360 edition was offered in the years 1999 and 2000 which presented a supercharged version of the 5.9 L Magnum V8 engine. The output is 360 bhp (270 kW; 360 PS) and 412 lb-ft (559 N-m) of torque. Modifications of the exterior consist of unique wheels, tires, suspension, and bumpers. This version came with the usual Viper blue paint with two racing stripes down the center of the truck. With it Boasting a 0-60 mph time of 7.1 seconds, the top speed was 142 mph (229 km/h).
Variants
In 1999, the Durango was offered in a 2WD model. There were a few changes made for the second year that consisted of two new paint colors and significant options available including 6 x 9 in (150 x 230 mm) heated rear view mirrors and steering wheel mounted radio controls. Leather seats were standard on SLT Plus models. On the SLT Plus and 4WD models, the body color wheel flares were standard. The first 4WD Durango was available in 1998.
Redesigned in 2001 were the Durango’s interior trim panels, dash mounted controls, instrument panel, overhead console, and the steering wheel. Now standard includes a dual-zone climate control system for the comfort of backseat passengers. Six speakers are now standard on all models for the improvement of sound speakers. Small changes include door panels, revised seats, aluminum wheels, and a few changes to trim options.
Durango offered a new SXT version in 2002 as the entry-level trim package. For safety, side curtain airbags were made an option.
In 2003 the Durango featured slight mechanical changes. The 4-wheel disc brakes were a notable addition.
