Nissan Maxima 2009 - Present
The Nissan Maxima is a full-size sedan built by the Japanese manufacturer Nissan Motors. The Maxima is currently in its seventh generation, which made its debut in 2008 at the New York International Auto Show.
For 2010, the Nissan Maxima comes powered by a 3.5 liter V6 that produces 290 hp and 261 lb-ft of torque. The engine is mated to Nissan’s automatic Continuously Variable Transmission with column-mounted shift paddles. The Nissan Maxima performs well on the road, reaching 60 mph from a standstill in just 5.2 seconds; very respectable for a car in this class. The EPA estimated fuel economy is around 19 / 26 mpg city / highway making for a combined fuel economy of 22 mpg. The car is agile on the road and has somewhat sports car-like handling. The suspension is well balanced and provides a comfortable ride while steering feels just right and offers adequate feedback. Braking is also very responsive with large vented discs outfitted with ABS at all four corners.
The newly designed seventh generation Maxima stands out because of the substantial fenders front and back, the large curved hood, boomerang style headlights and redesigned taillights. Overall the 2010 Nissan Maxima is an aggressive and modern looking car that is especially appealing to younger drivers.
Nissan has outfitted the Maxima with a luxurious and comfortable interior. Most of the cabin technology has been borrowed from high-end Infiniti cars. The materials used are of high quality for the most part with the exception of a few cheaper-looking plastic pieces here and there. The controls are well laid out on the center console and the gauges are big and easy to read. The front seats are very comfortable and they can be adjusted in more than 6 ways. The backseat is spacious offering considerable legroom and headroom. Also available on the 2010 Maxima is a Premium Package which trades in the standard rear bench for a pair of bucket-seats. The trunk is now marginally smaller than that of the previous generation, but an ample amount of cargo (14 cubic feet) can still be hauled.
In government crash tests the 2010 Nissan Maxima received five out of five stars for driver and front passenger protection in a frontal crash, five out of five stars for all passenger protection in side impact accidents, and a five out of five rating in roll over tests. The IIHS has yet to publish their results, but the Maxima is expected to receive the “Top Safety Pick” badge.
