Audi S5 2008 - Present
The Audi S5 is a more powerful version of the Audi A5, being built by the German manufacturer Audi AG. As the A5 the S5 is available in two body styles, two door coupe and two door cabriolet. The S5 has been offered by Audi since June 2007.
Like all other “S” models, the Audi S5 is offered only with all wheel drive Quattro system. As for the engine choices, the S5 coupe is available with Audi’s 4.2 liter V8 and the S5 cabriolet is offered with the 3.0 liter V6 turbocharged. The standard transmission is the six speed manual, the automatic Tiptronic is offered as optional for the coupe and single choice for cabriolet.
The coupe’s 4.2 liter is capable of producing 345 horsepower at 7000 rpm and 325 lb-ft at 3500 rpm, enabling the car to accelerate from standstill to sixty in a fast 4.9 seconds time. The quarter mile can be covered in 13 seconds. The fuel consumption, if mated to the automatic transmission, is at 14 miles per gallon city, 22 miles per gallon highway and 17 miles per gallon combined.
The cabriolet has the smaller 3.0 liter turbo, but the power difference is not that noticeable, producing 333 horsepower from 5500 rpm to 7000 rpm and 325 lb-ft from 2900 rpm to 5300 rpm. Being a little heavier the convertible S5 gets to 60 mph from standstill in 5.1 seconds and can cover the quarter mile in about 13 seconds. The max speed at which both can get is 155 mph, were they are electronically limited. The cabriolet is more fuel efficient than the coupe, returning 17 miles per gallon in the city drive and 26 miles per gallon on highway cruising.
The Audi A5 is a good looking “piece of metal” on wheels, at which some contributions have the LED daytime running lights, the taillight LED’s, the 19” five double spoke design and the rear spoiler integrated in the trunk lid, that ads more to dynamic look of the car. Careful attention to design has paid off, as the S5 is a true work of art. As acknowledged by Automobile Magazine as “Design of the Year,” the sculpted, fluid lines of the S5 make an elegant statement and create a profile of classic coupe proportions.
The interior of the S5 offers performance-driven design that is understated, yet offers loaded with luxury touches and careful attention to detail. The eight-way power adjustable sport seats in the front of the S5 offer greater lateral support thanks to higher density padding in the more prominent bolsters. The seats offer four-way power lumbar support for the driver and passenger. The third generation of Audi's MMI (multi-media interface) is also installed in the 2010 S5, including 3D map topography and Sirius traffic.
In terms of safety, the S5 offers no fewer than six airbags which include Sideguard head protection airbags for front and rear occupants, driver and front passenger dual-stage and dual-threshold airbags with occupant sensors as well as driver and front passenger seat-mounted chest side airbags. Also the S5 has crash sensors, if activated, it will unlock the doors, switch on the interior lights and the hazard warning lights and switches of the engine.
