Nissan Cube 2008 - Present
The Cube is a small MPV manufactured and marketed by the Japanese company Nissan Motors. The first Cube appeared in 1998 and was sold exclusively in Japan and Hong Kong. The Nissan Cube is currently in its third generation, which was unveiled in 2008 at the Los Angeles International Auto Show. This is the first time the Cube has been offered for export markets like North America and Europe. Nissan also presented an electric version of the Cube at the 2008 New York International Auto Show called the Nissan Denki Cube Concept. This car was planned for 2009 but has yet to go into production.
The only available engine choice for the Nissan Cube is a 1.8-liter four-banger that produces 122 hp and 127 lb-ft of torque. The engine is mated to either a six speed manual transmission or Nissan’s automatic Xtronic CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission). The Cube is available in front wheel drive as well as all wheel drive configuration with EPA fuel economy estimates around 28 / 35 mpg city / highway. The fuel economy in the city is one of the best is in its class but the highway fuel economy is lower than more than half of the other vehicles in the affordable, small car segment. The Nissan Cube handles well thanks to its relatively long wheelbase and lighter weight. Steering is light and has clearly been adjusted for city driving. Braking is decent enough to give confidence during every day traffic situations while the suspension feels overly soft for a car this size.
The exterior design of the 2010 Nissan Cube is very unique and refreshing. The Cube stands out because of the button-cute proportions, a jowly face, "rounded-rectangle" windows (inspired, Nissan says, by personal photo frames), and, especially, the asymmetrical tailgate effect. While it definitely does not appeal to everyone’s tastes, many, especially younger, people find it very appealing.
The interior looks funky and stylish and is meant to appeal to the younger generations of drivers. Material quality is moderate and there are some hard plastic padded surfaces. Nissan did away with a traditional center console on the Cube in order to maximize interior space. The controls are easy to use and the gauges are highlighted in a bright blue. The front seats are very comfortable with a six way adjustable drivers seat and a passenger seat that adjusts in four ways. The backseat is also very comfortable and can fit three adults with no problem. The rear bench can slide three ways and can also be raised to offer the rear passengers a great view of the road. Cargo space is limited to 11.3 cubic feet behind the backseat but expands to an impressive 58.1 cubic feet when the rear bench is in the down-folded position.
The 2010 Nissan Cube has not been tested by the federal government or Insurance agencies but it des offer a lot of standard safety features like six airbags, Vehicle Dynamic Control, Traction Control System, pipe-style steel side-door guard beams and a Tire Pressure Monitoring System.
