Nissan Murano 2008 - Present
The Nissan Murano is a mid-size crossover SUV manufactured by the Japanese company Nissam Motors. The name Murano comes from a region of Venice, Italy where the famous Murano glass is made. The Nissan Murano was first introduced in 2002 and it was the first Nissan Crossover SUV to hit the US market. The first generation Nissan Murano was based on the FFL platform shared with the third generation of the Nissan Altima. The second generation and current Murano is built on the “D” platform and was introduced in 2008.
For 2010, the Nissan Murano comes with a powerful 3.5 liter V6 engine that makes 265 hp and 248 lb-ft of torque. The engine is mated to the Nissan Xtronic CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission), and is available in two-wheel drive as well as all wheel drive. Performance numbers are above average in this class with a 0 to 60 time of 7.6 seconds and a maximum speed of 150 mph. In both two wheel drive and all wheel drive format, the EPA estimates an average fuel economy around 18 / 23 mpg city / highway. Because the Murano is built on the “D” platform, it offers responsive handling with car-like feel. Thanks to the independent suspension the ride is smooth and comfortable even on back roads. Steering feels tight and gives good road feedback while braking is very responsive with great pedal feel.
The exterior design of the Nissan Murano was restyled in 2009. The changes include a redesigned front grille that incorporates multi-element headlamp clusters with optional HID's. The new front end makes the car look more aggressive and, at the same time, more modern.
The interior is very classy and luxurious and it even features some hi-tech gadgets that are not available on any other competitor car. The user-friendly controls are well layed out on the center console and figuring them out takes just a matter of minutes. A great improvement over the previous generation has been made in the quality of the materials used; most of them being high quality and soft to the touch. There are also double-stitched leather insertions on the door panels. The front seats are comfortable but not very supportive. The standard seats are wrapped in good quality fabric but leather upholstery is available as an option or as standard on higher trim levels. The backseat is very comfortable offering ample headroom and legroom. The Murano offers plenty of cargo room; 31.8 cubic feet behind the backseat and 64 cubic feet with the backseat folded.
In safety tests conducted by the federal government, the 2010 Nissan Murano received five out of five stars for front and rear-seat safety in side impact crash tests and four out of five stars for driver and passenger protection in frontal crash tests. The Insurance Institute of Highway Safety granted the Murano their highest score of “Good” in frontal, side impact and rear crash protection tests. For 2010 the Nissan Murano comes equipped with a fair amount of standard safety equipment including roof-mounted curtain supplemental air bags for side-impact and rollover head protection, vehicle dynamic control, a traction control system, electronic brake force distribution and brake assist.
