The Buick Lucerne is a full-size car introduced by Buick in the winter of 2005 at the Chicago Auto Show. The Lucerne is based on the Pontiac Bonneville H-body platform. When the car was introduced to the market sales were very high, the car claiming 24% of the full-size sedan market in the United States. Unfortunately the 2009 model sold very bad and GM didn't expect to build a 2010 model of the Lucerne.

The Buick Lucerne comes with a standard V6 engine, the Cadillac Northstar V8 engines are optional.

The 4.6 liter Northstar V8 produces 292hp and 288 lb-ft of torque. The car can reach 60 mph in 7.5 seconds. The engine is mounted to an outdated four-speed automatic transmission, which significantly improves the cars fuel consumption. EPA estimates that the V8 engine should get just 15/22 mpg city/highway. Also the four-speed automatic doesn't let the V8 engine to run at its full capacity. The car handles pretty well although city driving is not its strong point because the turning radius is the worst in its class. The car is tuned for a soft and gentle ride; highway cruising is pleasant and the suspension offers you a floaty sensation. The breaks are not that efficient and almost no reviewers have something good to say about them.

The Lucerne's exterior is very elegant and classy. The waterfall grill and non-functional portholes in the front fenders give the car a traditional look and also keep the car from going over the top. The muscular design with carefully placed chrome accents is very appealing but also very American. Chrysler also added a spoiler to the rear aims to create a bolder and sportier look.

The interior is very spacious and it also offers a very ergonomic layout. The materials used are of premium quality and we clearly see that Buick gave excellent attention to details. The gauges are very simple and visible and the major controls are well-placed and easy to operate. The seats are comfortable and supportive. The Lucerne can seat five people, even six with the optional front bench seat. A weak point is the placement of the steering wheel, which some drivers may find too far away.

In Government safety tests the Lucerne got five stars out of five for frontal impact and four stars out of five for side impacts. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has not tested the Lucerne since 2008, but the mechanically similar 2008 model earned a high score of "Good" in the institute's frontal-impact crash testing, and "Acceptable" in side-impact tests.

Traction control, six airbags and anti-lock brakes are standard. Stability control and brake assist, however, are standard only on the CXL, CXL Special Edition and Super trims. Buick's Lane Departure Warning system is available as an additional upgrade for the Lucerne, which warns drivers, with both audio and visual cues, when the car is drifting into another lane. The Side Blind Zone Alert system is also available as an upgrade.

The Buick Lucerne is available in four trims. The CX trim is equipped with the standard 3.8 L V6 that produces 227 hp. The CXL trim is equipped with the same 3.8 L engine. The CXL Special Edition is equipped with the 4.6 L V8 that makes 275 hp. The last trim available is the Super, which is equipped with the 4.6 L Northstar V8 that produces 292 hp, 17 hp more than the CXL SE engine. .

The Buick Lucerne is a car to think about when you are buying a new full-size sedan.
