Cadillac DTS 2006 - Present
The Cadillac DTS is GM's largest full-size luxury sedan, launched in 2006 as the replacing model for the Cadillac Deville, based on the styling standards set by the CTS and STS. It was ranked 11 out of 13 luxury large cars. GM hopes that the current generation of the Cadillac DTS 2010 would sell better than the 2009 model which was one of the slowest selling cars in America. The Cadillac DTS is offered in four levels of trim: base, luxury, premium luxury and platinum, with only equipment setting them apart.
A heavy car made for highway travel, powered by a V8 4.6 liter producing 292 hp at 6300 rpm and 288 lf-ft at 4500 rpm in the best level of equipment, can be a short description of the car. The mentioned engine is available on the DTS PLATINUM version of the model. Its acceleration from 0 to sixty mph is made in about 7.12 seconds, good enough, but not the best compared to other in its class. The estimated fuel consumption is about 15/22/18 (city/highway/mixed), and the fuel tank can be filled up to 18.5 gal. Power travels to the front wheels through a 4 speed automatic transmission electronically controlled.
The Cadillac DTS is 207.6 inches long, 74.8 inches wide, 57.6 inches in height and the wheelbase is 115.6 inches, longer than Cadillac Escalade and wider than Mercedes-Benz S-Class, making it a large full-size sedan weighting 4009 lbs. The look of the car conserves well the old school styling of Cadillac, but with more modern refined edges, with influences from other continents (i.e. Europe carmakers). Also on the exterior, the car was fitted with 17 inch alloy wheels for base level, chromed for luxury and premium and 18 inch aluminum for the platinum level trim. The body material is fully galvanized steel with chrome insertions and chrome grille.
The Cadillac DTS is a five seat car, but can hold six in a custom configuration where there can be added a new bench between the front seats. There is plenty of room in the interior, large seats, making it comfortable to drive but also to be a passenger by having enough space for head and legs, the only bad thing is that the back passengers don't have access to all the electronic functions available for the Cadillac DTS. The interior is a blend of leather and wood, with soft surfaces, well finished. Other interior features include LED interior with reading rear lights, and a central panel with clear analog gouges easy to access, navigation system available only in the best two levels of equip, heated driver seat and passenger seat and a premium sound system with seat mounted LCD's.
In terms of safety, the DTS gets five out of five stars for driver protection in front-impact crash, and four stars for the passenger safety. When it comes for side-impacts the DTS only gets four stars for protecting the driver and back passenger. The car was not tested yet by the IIHS, but the 2008 model year shares similar mechanics and it got a good score in front impact and only average for the side-impact. For the safety, GM introduced a series of features standard on the DTS that include seat back mounted air bags and curtain head protection air bags that extend for both front driver and front passenger and rear passengers. Other safety features are the OnStar emergency assistance, 4 wheel ABS and disc brakes, antilock disc brakes, rear parking assist, theft prevention system, rear door child security lockout, tire pressure monitoring, StabiliTrak Electronic Stability Control System and Traction Control System.
The Premium version of the model features a greater engine same 4.6 liter Northstar V8 front mounted, but with more power generating 292 hp at 6300 rpm and 288 lb-ft of torque at 4500 rpm fitted with an adaptive 4 speed automatic transmission with overdrive. This engine is capable of a fuel efficiency of 15 mpg in the city, 22 on the highway and 18 mpg combined. Featuring this engine the car is capable of accelerating from zero to sixty mph in 7 seconds flat. This more powerful engine makes the Platinum the best driving model of DTS.
