Chevrolet Aveo 2003 - 2010
The Chevrolet Aveo introduced on 2002, is a subcompact vehicle, initially named Daewoo Kalos, produced and designed by a GM subsidiary manufacturer from South Korea called Daewoo. The main goal behind it's design and manufacturing is to create a cheap but reliable set of wheels to fill the marketing "holes" left in GM's model lineup.
The 2010 Chevrolet Aveo lineup comes in two guises a sedan named simply Aveo and a 4 door hatchback named Aveo5. Both models are equipped with the same engine, transmissions, and chassis components. The engine, a 1.6 liter, is designed more for fuel efficiency than speed or reliability. The 1.6 engine is capable of producing 103-horsepower and 107 pound-feet of torque, but its acceleration is substantially slowed by the five-speed manual transmission, although a four speed automatic is optional but doesn't solve the problem. Aveo was designed to be a city car with fuel efficiency in mind, and although most review's don't' agree, EPA estimates mileage for the pair is 27/35 mpg (city/highway) on models equipped with a five-speed manual transmission and 25/34 mpg for those with a four-speed automatic. As a preliminary conclusion, the Aveo, although lacking in many aspects, still has a small advantage over much of its class when it comes to fuel economy. The drive tests show that the Aveo steering is not very impressive but it's brakes and 14 inch wheel are more than adequate for a cheap city car, so all in all it has the necessary vehicle dynamics to be respectable vehicle in terms of road performance. A 15 inch set of wheel is also available in the optional package.
The 2010 redesign adds 1 horsepower to the engine and fixed some transmission issues which translate into a few more miles per gallon. Reviewers state however that the driving experience has gotten worse. Also a new standard rear spoiler is available for Aveo5 models, although it doesn't fix the main styling issues and the car still looks bland and boring with its forced twin-grille look borrowed from GM Chevy Malibu and Traverse. The Aveo comes with 3 body trims the base LS the 1LT and 2LT.Optional packages include remote keyless entry, power windows and door locks, cruise control, satellite radio, fog lamps, a trip computer, upgraded cloth upholstery, sunroof, perforated leatherette (vinyl) seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and even Bluetooth.
The interioris almost acceptable with it's grained plastics and chrome accents, and has plenty of headroom and outward visibility, but suffers some legroom issues. Behind the chrome and grained plastic accents hide some major issues like the headliner that looks like cardboard, poor-fitting panels and flimsy switchgear. Some other interior design problems include unlighted controls, small radio buttons with no tuning knob and the horn which is very difficult to activate in case of emergency. As a fun fact an input jack is installed on the radio and an optional CD/MP3 player sound system with 6 speakers is available.
The the Aveo receives moderate scores from both the federal administration and the insurance business although 2010 model's haven't received any airbag upgrades. The Aveo does not impress in safety even though safety is often a crucial element for buyers in this segment. It has absolutely no stability control and antilock brakes are optional only for the LT models with automatic transmission.
All in all the Aveo is a good and almost stable city car incapable of ever truly expressing the desires of a real driver but very capable of getting you from point A to point B without much fuss.
