Chrysler Sebring 2010 - Present
The Chrysler Sebring is a mid-size car built by Chrysler since 1995. The first model introduced was a coupe and later a cabriolet in 1996. Both models replaced the Chrysler LeBaron. The convertible was built on the Chrysler JA platform, while the coupe was built on the Mitsubishi Eclipse platform.
The Chrysler Sebring was named after Sebring, Florida, the site of the renowned endurance car race called the 12 Hours of Sebring.
The Chrysler Sebring 3.5L V6 produces 235hp, but it has the worst fuel economy in its class. Even with a six-speed automatic transmission the car's fuel consumption is 16/27 mpg. The car can reach 60 mph in 8 seconds, a fairly good time for a mid-sized car. The Sebring handles well on the road and its four-wheel independent suspension helps the car run smooth over bumps. The car also has anti-lock brakes, which give the car more security even when driving under slippery conditions.
The Chrysler Sebring looks like a veritable American car. The first thing you notice when you look at the car is the big chromed grill and the superb integrated headlamps. The new design is more appealing to both younger and older people because the designer team behind the new Chrysler Sebring decided to get rid of the old curvy look and replace it with a much more imposing look.
The interior looks simple and not too crowded. The materials used on the dash are of inferior quality, touching it doesn't give that sense of quality. The gauges are simple but you will have problems reading them at night. The front seats are very comfortable and stain proof, a thing appreciated by many reviewers. The backseat is also stain proof but not very roomy. The overall interior is good but not great, the lack of quality materials makes the car look cheap.
The Sebring is one of the safest sedans available on the market. In gouvernment testing the car earned five stars in almost every test; the car got four stars in only one test (protecting rear seat passengers in side-impact accidents). The Sebring also got top scores from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety in frontal and side impacts. For the 2010 model Chrysler offers front, side and side-curtain airbags as standard equipment. The car also features active head restraints for the front seats, designed to reduce the risk of whiplash.
The Sebring is available with three engine options. An inline four-cylinder model making 173 horsepower is the most fuel-efficient, with 21/30 mpg ratings. There are two V6 engines available at this time; a 2.7 liter V6 which makes 187 hp, rated for 19/27 mpg, and a 3.5 liter V6 with 235 hp, rated for 16/27 mpg, making this particular type of engine the worst fuel efficient engine mounted on a sedan.
Overall the Chrysler Sebring is one of the best American sedans on the market. Although Chrysler sold most of them to rental companies, only a small percentage were sold to the general public, but the numbers are starting to change. Most people buy the Sebring because of the many safety features, which are offered as standard equipment and only a small number of clients buy the car for its exterior design and interior features.
