Chevrolet Cobalt 2005 - 2010
The Chevrolet Cobalt is a compact car introduced by GM in 2004.The model is highly appreciated among consumers and rental companies for it's affordable prices, fuel efficiency and it's smooth and silent drive. The Cobalt is based on GM Delta platform common with many other GM models. The 2010 model will be the last Cobalt manufactured by GM, because of the introduction of the newer Chevrolet Cruze based on the new Delta II platform, which will eventually take Cobalt's place on the market. The Cobalt is available both as a a two-door coupe or as a four-door sedan and has four trims: Base, LS, LT and the highly appreciated SS Turbocharged
For the Base, LS and LT Cobalt trims, GM offers a 2.2-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 155 horsepower and 150 pound-feet of torque and can reach 0 to 60 mph in 9.3 seconds. The base model comes with a five speed manual transmission, while a four speed automatic is available for the LS and LT trims. Although the 2.2 liter engine is no flaming wagon when it comes to power, it can very pleasantly surprise you when you check your fuel gauge at the end of the day. EPA statistics show fuel economy with the manual is 25 mpg city, 35 mpg highway, 29 mpg combined. EPA also rated the LS and LT, both equipped with and automatic gearbox, as follows 24 mpg city/33 mpg highway and 27 mpg combined.
The SS Turbocharged boasts a 2.0 -liter turbocharged inline-4 powerplant that produces an inspiring 260 lb-ft of torque and 260 horsepower. Although equipped with a five speed manual automatic the SS is able to reach from 0 to 60 mph in 5.8 seconds, and according to EPA it's fuel consumption doesn't suffer that much, 22 mpg city/30 mpg highway and 25 mpg combined.
Cobalt's exterior remains the same for this year and while some tend to praise it stating that the car has racy tendencies in its design, others find the Cobalt bland and boring. Off all the trims the SS turbocharged is the most appreciated in terms of styling for its unique front and rear fascias, increased track, special rocker molding, standard rear wing and the dynamic paint. The LT is the only trim that get's a optional styling upgrade called Sport Appearance Package that features fog lights, body cladding, rear spoiler, chrome exhaust tip and polished alloy wheels.
The interior is functional but not cutting edge and it seems that the designers didn't get very creative on this one. The Cobalt comes equipped with lots of features that were traditionally associated with expensive automobiles, but once you get inside and you see past the nicely grained plastics and the chrome trims you realize that some pieces don't seem to fit together and others aren't finished that well. The are front seats are hard and the backseats suffer from inadequate legroom. On the up side there's a lot of nice features that add that little extra to the Cobalt like the Remote Start which features a button for lowering or raising the temperature before getting inside the vehicle. Other similar features include a trip computer, CD/MP3 player, satellite radio and an auxiliary audio jack for the Base trim. The LS trim features air conditioning, Bluetooth, a USB port for the audio system , leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio and cruise controls,a sunroof and premium Pioneer seven-speaker sound system for the Sun and Sound package.
The base model comes equipped with 15 inch wheels, while 16-inch alloy wheels, antilock brakes are available for the LS and the LT. The SS trim features 18-inch wheels shod with performance tires, an exclusive sport-tuned suspension and Brembo front brakes.
The Cobalt earned mixed scores in Government safety test and as conclusion the Cobalt is perfectly suited for the driver looking for economy of operation and price and a nice easy drive.
