The Ford Escape Hybrid has been launched by Ford in 2004 and was the first Hybrid SUV of all times. The Escape Hybrid features the same powertrain as its brother Mercury Mariner Hybrid, thus the Escape is also a full hybrid that can switch between working only on pure electricity, only on pure oil or with both for maximum performance. 2010 Ford Escape Hybrid can be bought with either front wheel drive or all wheel drive.

The powertrain found on the Ford Escape Hybrid is a combination of the 2.5 liter straight four, also found on the standard Escape and two electric motors, for the front wheel drive model, and extra electric motor is used on the all wheel drive version, that will move the rear wheels at need, the electric motors are powered by 330-volt nickel-metal-hydride (NiMH) battery pack.

The Escape Hybrid can go to speeds of 30 mph only using the electric engines, to gain this you will has to press the acceleration pedal very, very gently, also only on electric it can go for a maximum 1.8 miles when the batteries discharged and the internal combustion engine is started. As an all, the system can produce a top output of about 177 horsepower and a maximum torque of 136 lb-ft at 4500 rpm, individually the 2.5 liter engine is tuned to produce 155 horsepower at 6000 rpm and the electric engines can produce 94 horsepower at 5000 rpm. The transmission is and CVT automatic, that switches between the electric and gas modes seamless.

Acceleration is good, the Hybrid is one second faster than the 2.5 liter Escape, at 9.6 seconds flat to get from zero to sixty mph. The Hybrid Escape fuel consumption is the best in its class, with the front wheel drive version returning 34 miles per gallon in the city, 31 miles per gallon on highway and 32 miles per gallon in combined cycle. The all wheel drive version drinks 29 mpg city and 27 mpg highway.

On the inside you will find pretty much the same interior as the standard Escape's with spacious cabin, good materials and built and seat fabric made from recycled materials. The 2010 Ford Escape Hybrid is offered in two trim levels: Base and Limited. The Base model includes as standard: AM/FM stereo/single-CD player with 4 speakers, dual-zone electronic automatic temperature control, Ford SYNC, 6-way power driver's seat, electrochromic mirror, leather wrapped steering wheel with cruise and audio controls, premium cloth bucket front seats, SIRIUS SAT radio. The top of the line Limited trim adds up: two more speakers, ambient light, power monoroof, premium leather and reverse sensing system.

As for the safety, the 2010 Ford Escape Hybrid has received a top rating of five stars for protecting the occupants in frontal and side impact crash tests and three stars in the rollover test, in tests conducted by the federal government. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave the 2010 Escape Hybrid their top mark of "Good" in frontal, side and rear tests and only "Poor" for roof strength, with the standard Escape receiving "Marginal". Ford offers as standard safety features for the 2010 Escape Hybrid: frontal airbags for driver and front passenger, front seat mounted side impact airbags, side curtain airbags for front and rear, AdvanceTrac with Roll Stability Control, integrated blind spot mirror and Ford's MyKey.
