Ford Escape 2008 - Present
The Ford Escape is a compact crossover SUV, manufactured by one of the "Detroit Three", Ford Motor Company. The Escape is built on Ford's CD2 platform, which is also similar to Mazda's GF platform; on this platform Ford also build the Mariner sold under the Mercury brand and Mazda builds the Tribute. Ford has been building the Escape since 2001, when they launched it alongside with Mazda Tribute; up until now, the Escape has reached its second generation in 2008.
Current Ford Escape has been presented at the 2007 Los Angeles International Auto Show. The new model is not entirely a new model, because its still built on the CD2 platform, and has carried on most of previous generation internals, so you can call it pretty much just and updated version.
The update included, a restyled exterior with styling cues from other SUVs and CUVs in Ford range, like the Explorer, Edge and Expedition. On the change list we can note, the a new grill, larger headlamps, a cleaner lines on the side and rounded wheel arches. The inside had a major facelift. Current Ford Edge is offered in three trim levels: XLS, XLT and Limited.
The engine range provided by Ford for the 2010 Escape is a 2.5 liter straight four and a 3.0 liter V6. The V6 is offered as optional for the upper two XLT and Limited trim. The engine can produce a total of 240 horsepower at 6550 rpm and a maximum torque of 223 lb-ft at 4300 rpm. The engine is matted to a six speed automatic that delivers the power to either the front or all four wheels. Acceleration is pretty good, the V6 Ford Escape will do a zero to sixty mph run in 8.9 seconds. Fuel economy is fair, if you chose the FWD version the Edge returns 18 mpg city and 26 mpg highway, if you go for the AWD version you will get 1 mpg less city and 2 mpg less on highway.
The 2.5 liter straight four is standard for all trim levels. Maximum output of the engine is rated at 171 horsepower at 6000 rpm and peak torque of 171 lb-ft at 4500 rpm. This engine is matted to a five speed manual, with a six speed automatic as optional; the manual version is available only with FWD, while the automatic can run with AWD. The acceleration is almost decent, reaching 60 mph from standstill in 10.6 seconds. Fuel consumption on the other hand is great, the FWD manual returns 22 mpg city and 28 highway, the FWD automatic gets 2 mpg less city and same on highway, the AWD automatic returns 19 mpg city and 25 mpg highway.
Inside the Ford Escape you will find satisfying soft-touch material well assembled and finished. The cabin is roomy and the seating is good for upper trim levels. The entry level XLS trim include as standard: AM/FM stereo/single-CD player with 4 speakers, auxiliary jack input, cruise control, only two way adjustable driver seat and cruise control. The second, XLT trim adds up: auto-dimming rearview camera, compass, leather wrapped steering wheel with secondary audio controls, premium cloth seats with six way power driver seat and SIRIUS Satellite Radio with six months subscription. Top of the line, Limited trim includes the XLT trim plus: leather seats, Ford SYBC, Chrome finish on interior door handles, air register bezels and shifter insert, ambient light and two extra speakers.
As for the safety, the 2010 Ford Escape has received a top rating of five stars for protecting the occupants in frontal and side impact crash tests and three stars in the rollover test, in tests conducted by the federal government. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave the 2010 Escape their top mark of "Good" in frontal, side and rear tests and only "Marginal" for roof strength. Ford offers as standard safety features for the 2010 Escape: frontal airbags for driver and front passenger, front seat mounted side impact airbags, side curtain airbags for front and rear, AdvanceTrac with Roll Stability Control, integrated blind spot mirror and Ford's MyKey.
