BMW 5-Series (E39) 1995 - 2003
Overview
The BMW E39 5-Series is a mid size luxury / executive car manufactured by BMW from 1995 to 2003. The BMW E39 is the fourth generation of the 5-Series. At its launch in 1995 the BMW E39 replaced the BMW E34 and was replaced at the end of its production lifetime in 2003 by the BMW E60. In 2001 the BMW E39 5-Series received a minor facelift.
Variants
The BMW E39 5-Series was the first 5-Series to be offered only with 6 cylinder petrol engines, the only 4 cylinder engine was found in the diesel range. At the bottom of the model line-up was the 520i that featured a 2.0 liter 24 valves straight six that developed 150 hp, this model was produced since its launch until 2000 when the engine in the model was replaced by a 2.2 liter 24 valves straight six that developed 170 hp.
Next in the lineup as displacement was a 2.5 liter straight six that was mounted on the 523i from 1995 to 2000 and developed 170 hp. From 2000 they dropped the 523i. The same engine but with a 192 hp output was found in the 525i that was built from 2000 to 2003. From 1995 to 2000 BMW offered buyers the 528i that had mounted a 2.8 liter straight six and developed 193 hp. The 528i was replaced in 2000 by the 530i that had a 3.0 liter straight six that had an maximum power output of 231 hp. All models mentioned before were available with both manual and automatic transmissions.
A year after its launch BMW introduced the 535i that featured a 3.5 liter 32 valve V8 that was rated to produce some 245 hp and a massive 254 lb/ft of torque, this model was available only with automatic gearbox. At the same time BMW introduced a second V8 powered model, the 540i that featured a 4.4 liter 32 valves per cylinder that produced 286 hp and a healthy 320 lb/ft. The 540i E39 was available from 1997 to 2003 and clients could have opted for either manual or automatic transmissions. Excluding the M5 this was the most powerful E39 5-Series.
The E39 also had a good diesel engine powered 5-Series lineup. First diesel E39 5-Series to be offered was the 525tds and 525td, both featured a 2.5 liter 12 valves straight six that developed 143 hp and 116 hp respectively and both were produced until 2000 from 1996. Another diesel available until 2000 was the 530d with a 3.0 liter 24 valve straight six that had an output of 181 hp and was upgraded in 2000 to develop 193 hp. The upgraded version was produced until 2003.
From 2000 to 2003 BMW offered another two models. The 525d that featured a different 2.5 liter than the 525td and 525tds that developed 163 hp. The other model was the 520d that featured the only 4 cylinder engine in the E39 lineup, the 2.0 liter 16 valve, which had a maximum output of 134 horse power and 210 lb/ft of torque.
The most powerful E39 5- Series was the M5 that climbed up the leader from its predecessor which had a straight six. The E39 M5 now had a massive 5.0 liter V8 that kicked out a total of 400 lb/ft and a earth shaking 370 lb/ft of torque. The E39 M5 was introduced in 1998 and was produced until 2003, being offered only with a manual gearbox.
The North American range of BMW E39 5-Series, were the 528i, 540i and M5 from 1997 to 2000. In 2001, as the 528i was discontinued, BMW replaced it with the 525i and 530i.
As for the steering and the suspension, BMW fitted the E39 with two steering types and double pivot, MacPherson strut suspensions systems in the front and four-link integral suspension at the rear. A rack and pinion steering was used for the 520i-530i models which was lighter and gave the driver a more precise feeling than the recirculating ball type used on the V8s.
