Overview

The Acura Legend also known as Honda Legend was a luxury car built by the Japanese car manufacturer Honda. The Acura Legend had two generations and was on the market for sale between 1986 and 1995, when it was replaced by the Acura RL.

Second generation of the Acura Legend was produced from 1991 to 1995. Like its predecessor, the 2nd generation of the Acura Legend was available in both sedan and coupe body styles.

Variants

The second generation Acura Legend was larger than the fist generation. The Acura Legend sedan now measured 194.9 inch (4950 mm) in length, 71.3 inch (1811 mm) in width, 55.1 inch (1400 mm) in height and had a wheelbase of 114.6 inch (2911 mm). The Acura Legend coupe also grew in size having a length of 192.5 in (4890 mm), a width of 71.3 inch (1811 mm) the same as the sedan, a height of 53.7 inch (1364 mm) and a wheelbase of 111.4 inch (2830 mm).

The engine powering both the Acura Legend sedan and coupe was a 3.2 liter SOHC that produced 200 hp @ 5500 rpm and a maximum torque of 210 lb/ft @ 4500 rpm. The engine was mated to either a standard 5-speed manual or an optional 4-speed automatic.

In 1993 Honda upgraded the 3.2 liter engine used in the Acura Legend coupe. The new engine developed 230 hp @ 6200 rpm and 206 lb/ft of torque @ 5000 rpm. This engine was offered with a new 6 speed manual gearbox as standard or the 4 speed automatic as an option.

The Acura Legend was available in three trims: base, L and LS. The base model Acura Legend featured as standard: cloth seating surfaces, air-conditioning, cruise control, tilt steering wheel, AM-FM stereo with cassette player, power windows and locks and rear window defogger. The base trim was available only for the sedan body style

The mid-level trim, Legend L, featured all the base trims features plus: manually operated sunroof, driver's side air bag and leather-trimmed steering wheel. Both the sedan an the coupe were available with this trim. Top of the line Acura Legend LS included the L trim and added: leather seating surfaces and passenger side air bag. The LS trim was available on both sedan and coupe models.

The interior dimensions of the 2nd generation Acura Legend sedan are: 38.5 inches of front headroom and 42.7 inches of rear seat headroom, at the rear there were 37.2 inches of headroom and 36.5 inches of legroom.

In the coupe, the dimensions were: 37.3 inches of front headroom and 42.9 inches of front legroom; the rear seat offers 35.9 inches of headroom, 28.7 inches of legroom.

Additional Information

The Acura Legend was crash tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and received a 3 out of 5 stars for protecting the driver and 4 out of 5 stars for protecting the passenger in case of a frontal impact.

The second generation of the Acura Legend had a few recalls. Until now there were three major recalls, all referring to 1991 and 1992 models. First recall made was referring to the threaded inflator components that may have been damaged during assembly which may allow components to separate when inflator receives a signal to deploy the air bag causing hot combustion gases to escape into the passenger compartment which could result in injuries to vehicle occupants, only about 50 units were affected.

Seconds recall referred to the automatic transmission. Transmission shift cable bracket can be damaged by the engine rocking forward on engine mounts in a minor collision. When the shift cable bracket is damaged, the shift lever position may not correctly indicate the transmission gear position. This could result in unanticipated movement of the car and an accident. Potential units affected were 14,230 all built in 1991.

Third recall was made for 1991 Acura Legend. The recall referred to the Bose Audio system that had a separate amplifier behind the rear seats back; a transistor in the speaker amplifier could overheat resulting in smoke or possibility of fire. Number of possible units affected 47,158.

The Acura Legend is present on an episode of MTV's reality show Cribs, hip-hop artist Ludacris owns a 1993 Acura Legend sedan, which he calls his favorite car.
