Overview

The Acura MDX is a mid-sized SUV manufactured by the Japanese automaker Honda. The first generation of the Acura MDX was built from 2001 to 2006 at the Acura plant in Ontario, Canada, and was the first crossover SUV to have third-row seating. The Acura MDX reached its second generation as a 2007 model.

Variants

The first generation Acura MDX was offered with one engine, the 3.5 liter V6, which produces 240 hp @ 5,300 rpm and 245 lb/ft of torque @ 3,000 rpm. In 2003 the engine received and upgrade which added an extra 15 horsepower and 8 lb/ft of torque. The engine is matted to a 5 speed automatic gearbox that was also upgraded in 2003.

The Acura MDX measures 188.5 inches in length (4,788 mm), 77 inches in width (1,955 mm), 68.7 inches in height (1,745 mm), and has a wheelbase of 106.3 inches (2,700 mm). The Touring edition offers seven seats and has the same dimensions except for the height, being taller at 71.3 inches (1,811 mm). The MDX weighs in at 4,451 pounds (2,023 kg).

Acura fitted the MDX with an automatic four wheel drive system (named VTM-4) that engages during off the line acceleration or when slippage is detected. The AWD system is the same as the one found in the Honda Pilot and Honda Ridgeline. The AWD system found on the Honda CR-V is different, and features a real-time, all wheel drive system that can be locked.

The 1st generation of the Acura MDX is a very well equipped crossover SUV. Standard features include: leather upholstery, power heated front bucket seats, power sunroof, 17-inch alloy wheels, front side airbags, all-disc antilock brakes, rear air conditioning, CD player and heated mirrors. The optional Touring package added a memory mirror on the driver's side, a roof rack, and a six-disc in-dash CD changer. A dashboard mounted navigation system was also an option.

The 2004 model features side curtain airbags, new head and tail lights, new wheels, and dual tail pipes instead of the single pipe in previous models. Some of the chrome trimmings on the 2004 model use a matte finish to be distinguished from the polished finish on earlier models.

The Acura MDX has been crash tested by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The NHTSA issued the MDX a rating of 5 out 5 stars in both front and side impacts. The IIHS also tested the MDX which issued the highest score of "Good" in all tests performed by the institute. The standard safety features on the Acura MDX include: Electronic Stability Control, 4-Wheel ABS, Traction Control, Auto-Dimming Rearview Mirrors, child seat lower anchor, Front Adjustable Upper Belt, Pretensioner, Energy Management Feature, Rear Center Lap/Shoulder Belt, Front Side Airbags, Front Head Airbags, Rear Seat Head Restraint, Trunk Release and Tire Pressure Monitor.

Additional Information

"Coming across as a highly competent and pleasing compromise, the MDX feels more nimble than a Lexus RX300, lighter on its feet than a Mercedes ML, and nearly as athletic as the V8 BMW X5. Road manners are car like and even sporty at reasonable cornering speeds which is similar to most SUV's in this class. The suspension is firm but remains comfortable over most large bumps, which provides a nice balance between ride-comfort and handling ability. Still, the Lexus RX and Toyota Highlander remain a bit more polished at ironing out lumpy freeways.

The Acura MDX has had a few recalls. 2001-2002 models: Gear failure due to heat build-up between the countershaft and secondary shaft of the auto transmission resulting in transmission lockup. Dealers will inspect and replace affected parts; On MDX's sold in specific states, excessive corrosion can cause spring failure and possible breakage which could puncture the front tire and increase the risk of a crash; 2002 models were recalled for: Water-pump timing-belt tensioner-pulley may be misaligned and could cause the timing belt to fail resulting in engine stalling. Dealers will inspect the water pump and replace the pump and timing belt if necessary. 2005 models were recalled for: Improperly manufactured fuel tank could be damaged and leak upon impact resulting in fire.
