Overview

The Cadillac Catera is a mid-size car manufactured by General Motors under the Cadillac brand. The Catera is actually a rebadged version of the Opel Omega, built in in Russelsheim, Germany. In North America the Catera was marketed as an entry-level vehicle and was avialable only with rear-wheel drive and with only one engine choice, a 3.0-Litre V6. The Catera was introduced in 1997 and stayed in production until 2001. It was replaced by the Cadillac CTS in 2002.

Variants

The Cadillac Catera was powered by a 3.0-Litre V6 engine that produced 200hp. The engine could have been mated only to a 4-speed automatic transmission. Standard equipment on the Cadillac Catera included antilock brakes, traction control, daytime running lights, dual front airbags, 16 inch alloy wheels, fold down rear seat, power windows, electrochromatic mirrors, power seats, tilt steering wheel, programmable power locks, automatic climate controls, leather wrapped steering wheel with integrated audio controls and a theft-deterrent system. There were not to many optionals features for the Catera, only rear-seat heaters, Bose sound with 8 speakers, chrome wheels, leather upholstery and a power sunroof.

In 1988 the Cadillac Catera some new features entered the option list. This options were a rear-window sunshade, the OnStar system which linked the car via satellite and cellular telephone to a 24-hour GM Center where you can ask for directions and travle advice. The Bose audi system was now equipped with data system capability and it was now able to display such broadcast information as station call letters and song titles.

In 1999 a Sports model was introduced. This new model used the same engine but it was equipped with side airbags, heated front seats, 17 inch wheels, audible theft-deterrent system, high-intensity discharge headlamps, an improved suspension, a new rear spoiler, driver’s seat memory and a three-channel garage door opener. In 1999 the Catera also became the first Cadillac to meet low emission vehicle standards.

In the year 2000 the Catera’s design was refreshed and the interior was also revised. All the 2000 models now were equiped with side airbags, new cup-holders and upper child-seat rear anchors. The suspension used on the 1999 Catera Sport was now standard on all Cateras and the Sport model’s suspension was refined.

In 2001 only one notable change occurred, the solid rear-break discs were replaced by vented ones.

Additional Information

The Cadillac Catera was one of Cadillacs worst vehicles produced. Altough it sold around 95.000 vehicles troughout its years of production the Catera suffered from major reliability issues such as tire wear issues, engine failures due to timing belt tensioner failure and faulty oil coolers. This reliability issues and a poor marketing campaign led to the discontinuation of the Catera in 2001.
