Overview

The Ferrari 308 GTB was a mid engined sport car manufactured by Italian auto maker Ferrari from 1975 to 1979. The Ferrari 308 GTB replaced the Dino 246 and its self was replaced by the Ferrari 328. The name comes from the engine size and number of cylinders, hence the 3.0 liter V8; GTB stand for Grand Turismo Berlinetta and GTS stand for Grand Turismo Spider.

The Ferrari 308 was available in two body styles, berlinetta or two door coupe named GTB and spider or convertible named GTS. The car was introduced at the 1975 Paris Motor Show, where Ferrari also presented the Bertone designed Dino 308 GT4. The 308 GTB had Pininfarina's Leonardo Fioravanti as designer. Fioravanti gave the 308 GTB / GTS aggressive lines and sweeping curves, making the 308 the most recognized and iconic Ferrari road car.

Variants

The Ferrari 308 had one engine that was upgraded twice. First engine to be installed was the 3.0 liter V8 that produced a total of 250 horse power @ 7700 rpm and a maximum torque of 217 lb/ft @ 5000 rpm, the model produced for the US market produced only 240 @ 6600 rpm and 195 torques @ 5000 due to the installation of emissions control devices. The engine was mated to a five speed manual that delivered the power to the rear wheels. The fuel delivery system found on the 308 GTB and GTS was Weber 40 DCNF Carburettors. Performances of the car were very good, reaching 60 miles per hour from zero in a fast 6.1 seconds and could travel the quarter mile in just 14.5 seconds. Fuel economy was decent returning on average 15.5 mpg (15.1 liter / 100 km).

In 1980 the engine was upgraded with Bosch K-Jetronic mechanical fuel injection, that actually decreased the power but it also decreased the emissions; the new model was named 308 GTBi and GTSi. The power output for the European model was 211 hp @ 6600 rpm and peck torque of 179 lb/ft @ 4600 rpm; the US model was only 5 hp down on horse power, but it had a little bit more torque. Transmission was again a five speed manual. The performances were affected by the decrease of power, so the 0 to 60 mph time was 6.9 seconds and the 0 to mile time was 15.3 seconds. On the other hand the fuel consumption was a little better, returning an average of 15.9 miles per gallon (14.8 liter / 100 km).

From 1982 until the end of the production of the Ferrari 308 GTB and GTS, the engine found on the had 4 valves per cylinder (compared to only 2 on the previous models), thing the brought the power up almost to were it was when production started; with this upgrade the 308 was now knew as 308 GTB QUATTROVALVOLE and GTS QUATTROVALVOLE or shorter QV. The power output on the European model now delivered 240 hp @ 7000 rpm and maximum torque of 192 lb/ft @ 5000 to the rear wheels trough the same five speed manual. As with the previous models, the US models were a little down on power, producing only 230 hp @ 6800 rpm and 188 lb/ft of torque @ 5500 rpm. Performances were restored to were they were, with a not to 60 miles per hour time of 6.1 seconds an a quarter miletime of 14.5 seconds, virtually identical to the carbureted 308 GTB and GTS. As for the fuel consumption the 308 GTB QV and GTS QV returned an average of 15.5 miles per gallon (15.1 liters per 100 km).

The dimensions of the car remained the same in all of its 10 year of production time. In length the 308 GTB and GTS measured 172.4 inch (4379 mm), in width it measured 67.7 inch (1720 mm) and height it measured 44.1 inch (1120 mm). The wheelbase was of 92.1 inch (2313 mm), the front and rear track were the same measuring 57.5 inch (1460 mm). The three variants had relatively similar weight, the GTB / GTBi / GTB QV had 3159 lbs (1421 kg) / 3317 lbs (1492kg) / 3190 lbs (1435 kg), the GTS / GTSi / GTS QV had 3225 lbs (1451 kg) / 3366 lbs (1514 kg) / 3229 lbs (1453 kg).

Additional Information

Total production number for the 308 GTB and 308 GTS, including the Injection and QV models was 12,004 units.

The Ferrari 308 GTB was listed as number five in the Sports Car International's list of "Top Sports Cars of the 1970s".
