Overview

The fifth generation of the Honda Accord debuted in 1994 and production ended in 1997, when it was replaced by the sixth generation. The fifth generation Accord was built on the CD platform. The CD platform allowed the car to grow in width with but the car shrunk in length with 1.2 inches. The exterior was slightly changed, the most notable change is in the back and the front bumper. The interior was now more ergonomic and standard safety features included dual airbags and reinforced side-impact beams.

Variants

The available models were still the DX, LX and top of the line EX. The DX model was the base model and it was equipped with standard equipment. Both the DX and the LX were equipped with a four cylinder 2.2-Liter engine that produced 130 horsepower and 139 lb-ft of torque. Transmission choices included the standard five-speed manual transmission or the four speed automatic transmission, which now included Honda’s “Grade-Logic” shift program.

The top of the line EX model was equipped with a four cylinder 2.2-liter SOHC VTEC engine that produced 145 horsepower and 147 lb-ft of torque. The same five speed manual and four speed automatic transmission were available for the EX model. Other features on the EX included antilock brakes, 15 inch alloy wheels, four wheel disc brakes, and a rear stabilizer bar. A EX-L model was also in the lineup but this model was just a leather equipped variant of the EX thus the L at the end.

The performance model was still the Honda Accord SiR. The Accord SiR was equipped with a 2.2-Liter DOHC VTEC engine that produced 190 horsepower and 152 lb-ft of torque. The standard transmission choice was the five speed manual transmission with the four speed automatic as an option. Other features on the SiR included Factory installed driving lights, Optional SRS and airbags, cruise control, automatic climate control, 7400 tachometer, a Bose Stereo System, black housing front headlights, optional electronic traction control, optional Limited slip differential for the automatic transmission, optional sunroof and power retractable outside mirrors.

In 1995 Honda introduced a new engine to the lineup. This new engine was a 2.7-Liter V6 engine that produced 170 horsepower and 165 lb-ft of torque. The engine was available as an option for the LX and EX models. Due to its larger size, V^ Accord cars suffered some modifications to the front fenders which were now taller and a different hood was added. V6 equipped Honda Accords had dual exhaust pipes, the sole transmission was the four speed automatic transmission and unique wheels.

In 1996 The fifth generation of the Honda Accord received a facelift which included more rounded bumpers, modified tail lights and modified front fascia with new signal lights. This year a 25th Anniversary edition was added to the lineup. The model was placed between the DX and LX models and it was equipped with the same 2.2-Liter engine.

In 1997 another model was introduced. This new model was called Special Edition and it was equipped with the 2.2-Liter used on the DX and LX models. The only transmission available was the four speed automatic transmission. Other features included a factory installed security system with remote keyless entry, body colored side moldings, a sunroof, distinctive alloy wheels and a single-disc CD Player. The Special Edition model was available in three colors only, Heather Mist Metallic, San Mrino Red and Dark Currant Pearl.

Additional Information

Throughout the years of production the fifth generation of the Honda Accord went trough a series of recalls. The first recall was made in 1994 because some tire valve stems were damaged during assembly which resulted in a sudden loss of air pressure and loss of control. The second recall was made in 1995 because some supplemental restraint system electronic control units can cause sudden deployment of the airbag. The third recall was made for some 1995-1997 Accords except the V6 models. This recall was made because some improperly routed wire harness for factory installed air conditioner can allow wires to touch each other and eventually causing a shot circuit, smoke or even fire. The last recall was made in 1997 because certain ball joints can wear out prematurely and in the worst case would separate causing total collapse of the front suspension.
