Aston martin DBS 1967-1972
Overview
The Aston Martin DBS is a grand tourer manufactured by the Aston Martin Lagonda Liminted. The original Aston Martin DBS was introduced in 1967 and production ended in 1972. There were 787 units produced troughout the years of production. The car was featured in the James Bond movie, On Her Majesty’s Secret Service.
The Aston Martin DBS was intended to be the successor of the Aston Martin DB6 but the two ended up running concurrently for three years.
Variants
The Aston martin DBS was a full size coupe, larger than the DB6 . The car was also different from the DB6 and had a more modern look with a fastback style rear end and a squared front grille, which was in contrast with the grill design used before on Aston Martin models, but it was in style in the automovie world in the sixties. The most noticeable design features of the Aston Martin DBS were the bonnet scoop and the knock off wire wheels. The side air vents with stainless steel brightwork were keept.
The Aston Martin DBS was powered by a straight six 4.0-Liter DOHC engine that produced 282 horsepower and 288 lb-ft of torque. The engine was mated to a five speed manual transmission. In performance test the DBS accelerated from 0-60 mph in 6.3 seconds and ran the quarter mile in 14.7 seconds. The maximum speed reached was 149 mph and fuel consumption was 14.7 mpg.
A high-output Vantage version was offered as a no-cost option. The Vantage variants was equipped with the same straight six 4.0-Liter DOHC engine but substituted Italian made Weber carburettors for the DBS' original SU units. The engine’s output grew to 325 horsepower and 290 lb-ft of torque, mated to the same five speed manual transmission. In performance test the DBS Vantage accelerated from 0-60 mph in 5.9 seconds and ran the quarter mile in 14.3 seconds. The maximum speed reached by the DB6 Vantage was 162 mph and fuel consumption was 14.3 mpg.
Additional Information
Like the Aston martin DB5, the DBS was a poipular movie car. In 1969 the car was used in George Lazenby’s James Bond Movie, On Her Majesty’s Secret Service. Unlike Bond’s previous car, the DB5, the Aston Martin did not have a gadgets installed only a mounting for a telescopic-sight rifle in the glove compartment. In the final scenes of the film Bon’d wife is shot and killed in the DBS.
The DBS was also featured in the next James Bond film, Diamonds are forever, but in only one scene. In this scene the DBS was fittet with some sort of small missiles.
A distinctive orange/gold Aston Marin DBS was featured in the TV Series “The Persuaders”. In the series, the main carachter Lord Brett Sinclair drove the car.
